As the alternative protein sector continues to grow and expand, it is important to pay attention to the major trends that will shape its future. These trends will influence how consumers perceive and consume alternative proteins, and how they become part of the mainstream food culture. Here are the main developments to watch out for in this field.

1. The opportunities and risks for the emerging industry of animal-free meat

The production of meat from cell cultures has been authorized by only two nations, the U.S. and Singapore, as of 2023. Several other countries are likely to follow suit in 2024 and grant permission for this novel food source. The UK, Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand are among the frontrunners in this regard.

2. Delicious and nutritious alternatives

The meat industry has been challenged by the emergence of alternative meat in recent years, and has responded with a marketing campaign that sometimes verges on spreading false or misleading information. They have tried to portray plant-based products as artificial, unhealthy, highly processed or otherwise detrimental.
