A new EU-funded research program, FEASTS, which stands for Fostering European Cellular Agriculture for Sustainable Transition Solution, has started this month to conduct a three-year project on producing meat and seafood from cell cultures.
The program’s objective is to collect comprehensive, “unbiased” data and technical know-how about cell-based meat to create a framework for sustainable production and advocate for the technology as a future protein production method.
FEASTS is a network of 36 diverse entities from 17 countries, spanning from academic and research institutions, to startups, accelerators, consultants, global food innovation initiatives, farmers and aquafarmers associations, and a consumer group.
Marja-Liisa Meurice, Director of EIT Food North and East region and consortium partner at FEASTS, says: “Our goal is to evaluate the most sustainable and economically feasible technologies, and to determine their role in the EU food system. We hope that our results will ultimately provide a useful tool for informed policy and decision-making in the EU.”
