BioCraft Pet Nutrition, a company from Delaware that makes vegan pet food, is among the top three contenders for the first-ever VWS Awards in the Innovation of the Year category. The other two finalists in this category are Uncased BioLeather from New York, which produces animal-free leather, and UPSIDE Foods: Cultivated Chicken from Berkeley, which grows chicken meat from cells. These three companies are part of a larger group of 23 women who are driving vegan change around the world.
BioCraft Pet Nutrition, which used to be called Because, Animals, started in 2023 with the sole aim of bringing cultured meat ingredients to the pet food market. With this aim, the company’s Founder and CEO Shannon Falconer, Ph.D., and her team are focused on transforming the way protein sources for dog and cat food are perceived.
BioCraft already has cultured mouse meat for cat food in its portfolio. In June 2023, the company revealed that it had developed a unique cultured chicken ingredient for pet food, which comes from stem cells, has all the vital nutrients that dogs and cats need, and does not have any of the antibiotics, steroids, hormones, or other pollutants that are present in conventional animal proteins, as per BioCraft.
