The Journal of Nutrition has published a recent study that suggests beef has a stronger impact on muscle protein synthesis when compared to plant-based meat alternatives.
The research study, which involved a total of 16 participants ranging in age from 65 to 85 years old, aimed to compare the rates of muscle protein synthesis after the consumption of a meal containing beef versus a meal that was vegan.
The role of beef in muscle protein synthesis
According to the results, it was found that the presence of essential amino acids in the blood increased by 127% when consuming beef, as opposed to the vegan alternative. Additionally, the rate of muscle protein synthesis was observed to be 47% higher when beef was consumed.
Older individuals, who often experience muscle mass loss as they age, can greatly benefit from these findings as they highlight the importance of diets that promote muscle protein synthesis.
Looking for substitutes for protein synthesis
Regardless of this, researchers are exploring other options to stimulate protein synthesis without exclusively relying on animal meat.
