The FSA, which oversees food safety in the UK, has launched a consultation with producers of cell-based meat in the nation as it explores possible revisions to its regulatory framework.
According to Food Manufacture, the FSA is conducting a survey to find out when and how companies will apply for regulatory approval for their cultivated meat products. The FSA has opened the door for applications for these products, following the news in October that the UK government and regulators wanted to speed up the approval process for these foods. The industry could contribute to the UK’s sustainability goals and enhance food security.
On March 20, the FSA will discuss potential changes to the Novel Foods Regulatory Framework that could foster innovation. The UK’s departure from the EU allows for more flexibility in the regulatory approval system for novel foods.
To facilitate communication between regulators and companies, a “cultivated meat sandbox” could be established, following the suggestions from a report by the Alternative Proteins Association in 2022.
