On Monday (20), the global food giant, JBS, signed a groundbreaking partnership with UFSC (Federal University of Santa Catarina) to collaboratively work on the development of in vitro meat.
The contract is signed by Gilberto Tomazzone, who is the Global CEO of JBS, and Irino Manuel de Souza, who is the Dean of UFSC.
The company is currently investing a staggering amount of R$400 million to construct an advanced research center in Sapiens Parque, located in Florianópolis. This research center is set to become the largest and most advanced food biotechnology research facility in the entire country of Brazil.
According to Gilberto Tomazzoni, the Global CEO of JBS, the city was not chosen randomly. “The company acknowledges the innovative potential that has been demonstrated and implemented in other regions.”
The JBS Biotechnology Innovation Center project, which has been named as such, has garnered the backing of not only local public authorities but also the government of Santa Catarina and the city of Florianópolis.
According to Gilberto Tomazzone, the global CEO of JBS, the reason for calling it the Innovation Center is because they aim to establish a center of excellence in biotechnology in Brazil that has the potential to generate innovation worldwide.
