Many food companies in Europe are developing alternative proteins with cutting-edge technology, but they often prefer to introduce their products in the US or Singapore first.
Meatable, a Dutch company that produces meat from animal cells, aims to introduce its product to the market in the first half of this year, if everything goes according to its plan.
Meatable is a European company that produces meat from animal cells grown in bioreactors, similar to the ones used for making beer. However, this cell-based meat is not yet available for European consumers in their local grocery stores.
Following the example of many novel food companies in Europe, Meatable aims to launch its products in Singapore, where the regulatory process is faster and more streamlined. It then intends to enter the US market, before exploring other opportunities in different regions from 2026 onwards.
A Meatable spokesman said that the company is in contact with European authorities, but “the process of applying for novel food approval in Europe is lengthy and complicated.” This process usually takes about three years.
In December 2020, Singapore became the pioneer nation to authorize the consumption of meat produced in laboratories. Six months later, the US followed suit and allowed the same kind of meat to be sold to the public.
