Researchers from the University of Warwick in the UK predict that cultivated turkey will soon become the main dish at Christmas dinners.
Dr. Radu Cimpeanu, a theoretical mathematician, is collaborating with Professor Daniel Harris and industry partners to create affordable and sustainable meat alternatives.
Cultivated meat, or cultured meat, is produced by directly cultivating animal cells, resulting in genuine animal meat. According to Dr. Cimpeanu, cultivated turkey cells can mimic the sensory and nutritional properties of traditional meat.
This cultivated meat project is currently in its initial phase and seeks to develop computational models for optimizing cell oxygen and nutrient uptake in early meat cultivation. The texture of cultivated meat could improve while reducing costs with this increase in oxygen and nutrients, making it economically viable.
Researchers highlight the numerous benefits of cultivated meat, such as mitigating climate impacts, tackling antibiotic resistance, and increasing food availability.
