The Seafood Algernative project aimed to produce fish alternatives from microalgae, in response to the increasing need for eco-friendly food options. The project was led by Algama and supported by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund. It ran from August 2021 to December 2023.
Algama is creating various products from mayonnaise to egg substitutes to even seafood-like products using algae as a food ingredient. According to Thai Union Leader Chris Aurand, who spoke to SeafoodSource, this offers a great chance to use eco-friendly, ocean-based ingredients in daily products, taking advantage of the natural savory taste and the extra nutritional value.
