Upside Foods, the startup that creates alternative protein from animal cells, is asking for help in its fight against two proposed laws in Florida that would prohibit lab-grown meat and seafood
The upside, which bought Cultured Decadence – a maker of lab-grown lobster – in 2022 has expressed its worry that the bills will “make it illegal to produce, sell, or eat cultivated meat”. Therefore, it is urging alternative protein fans to “contact Florida lawmakers to inform them about the risks of cultivated meat prohibitions”.
The company is one of two authorized to sell lab-grown meat in the US and in 2022 launched a $50 million Engineering, Production, and Innovation Center (EPIC) in California, which they touted as “the world’s most cutting-edge facility for producing cultivated meat, poultry and seafood”.
Even though their main office is in California, they worry that any prohibition in Florida could affect the whole US.
As the company stated in a news release: We are very worried about this law, as it affects the expanding protein biotech research, which could be a key part of Florida’s farming future.
