House Bill 2244, created by Rep. Quang Nguyen, R-Prescott Valley, aims to prohibit the intentional misrepresentation of non-livestock or poultry products as meat. According to the language, the term cannot be used if the offered product was created in a lab from cultured animal cells.
Nguyen clarified that the same ban would be in effect for any synthetic product that comes from a plant, insect, or any other source.
Nguyen informed Capitol Media Services that he has no plans to prohibit grocers from selling, or customers from buying, these products. However, he mentioned that it’s about being transparent and providing information.
Rep. David Marshall, on the other hand, desires to go even further and prohibit what he views as these artificial meat products from coming into Arizona. House Bill 2121 crafted by the Snowflake Republican would prohibit the sale or production of any “cell-cultured animal product for human or animal consumption.”
