Quotes from Asia Food Journal, April 1, 2024

It is anticipated that by the year 2031, the worldwide market for plant-based products will expand to an estimated value of 120 billion U.S. dollars. A considerable portion of this growth is expected to occur within the regions of Asia Pacific, the Middle East, and Africa.

In the current market, the variety of plant-based products extends well beyond the realm of simple meatless burger options. A brief perusal of the shelves in any grocery store will reveal a wide array of plant-based substitutes that have made their way into numerous food sections, including dairy alternatives, frozen desserts, instant meals and drinks, as well as a selection of sauces and spreads. This expansion reflects a growing consumer interest in plant-based nutrition and its diverse applications in everyday cuisine.

Reflecting on the initial introduction of plant-based products into the marketplace, it’s evident that they were primarily catering to a growing consumer interest in health-conscious food options. These alternatives to traditional meat products were part of a broader effort to manage and maintain optimal cardiovascular health, particularly concerning blood pressure and cholesterol management.

In the regions of the Middle East, there has been an increasing awareness regarding the health consequences associated with the excessive consumption of products derived from animals. This shift in perspective, coupled with the trend towards plant-based diets following the global health crisis, is anticipated to catalyze the expansion of the market for alternatives to traditional meat and dairy products.

Subsequently, regional market participants introduced a range of plant-derived meat and dairy alternatives. These initial versions of plant-based offerings were primarily designed with functionality in mind, targeting health benefits like lowering the incidence of cardiac ailments and diabetes, while the emotional and sensory experience was somewhat overlooked.

The current task for producers of food is to enhance the appeal of plant-based offerings to match the taste of meat-based options, broaden their market reach, and sustain the appetite of regional consumers for these products.

It is anticipated that by 2031, the worldwide market for plant-based products will expand to a value of approximately 120 billion US dollars. Forecasts suggest that the Middle East will experience a significant annual growth rate of 17%. It is the younger demographic within this region that is expected to drive the sustained popularity and success of this market segment. The demographic cohort following Gen Z, often referred to as Gen Z Alphas, is poised to play a pivotal role in fostering innovation within the realm of plant-based offerings. This group is recognized for their cooperative approach and their emphasis on meaningful engagement and impact.
