A competition for businesswomen has declared a biotech firm as the winner, recognizing their breakthrough sustainable material that aims to revolutionize the medical device industry.
The Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce organized the Women Entrepreneurs Pitch Competition, and it was SymbioTex who came out on top, claiming the coveted first place.
The company, which is based in Wolverhampton and was founded and is currently being run by chief executive Olivia Simpson, specializes in using sustainably cultivated seaweed to manufacture home compostable filaments and pellets. These materials are then utilized in the production of cosmetic pots as well as medical devices like inhalers.
Out of the 120 billion units produced by the cosmetic packaging sector each year, less than 14% make it to recycling plants. As a result, a significant amount of cosmetic packaging and disposable medical devices are disposed of in landfills.
